Chapter 4
It was like they were watching a child who had finally grown up. I glanced at Jerry and looked at Henry, then let out a very sarcastic remark, “This wedding … the one person you both least wanted to see here is me, isn’t it?” My words made Henry and Jerry’s faces stiffen. The other guests at the venue also furrowed their brows and said, “This woman isn’t right in her head, is it? This is her son’s wedding, she did not come here to give him a blessing, instead, she came here just to make trouble?” “I’ve heard that she’s delusional and has been acting up all these years, either saying that Henry isn’t her son or calling the police to ask people to help find her daughter. She drove her family crazy.” “The thing is that she makes trouble every day, but her husband never gives up on her and takes care of her every day. Her son also tolerates her. He keeps trying to find a way to help her get better.” “How could a troublesome woman like her deserve to marry such a loving husband and give birth to a kind, sensible son?” “Exactly. I can’t stand people who are mentally unstable. All they do is cause trouble and disgust everyone around them!” All eyes turned on me. They were full of contempt, judgment and anger as if I were a murderer and arsonist. Faced with this, Jerry was the first one who stepped forward and stood up for me. “Please don’t say that. Sophia is just sick. Deep down, she’s not a bad person.” “I hope everyone can be more understanding and compassionate toward her. “When she’s cured, she’ll definitely love our family as well as before,” he added. Henry nodded in agreement. “Yeah, no matter what, she’s the one who gave birth to me and raised me. She’s the person I love most in this world.” “If people have any grievances against her, feel free to take it out on me instead. Just don’t hurt my mom.” The sincerity in Jerry and Henry’s words struck a chord in the guests’ hearts in the venue. One by one, they clapped for them with faces full of admiration. However, amidst all the applause, I smiled coldly. My eyes were like ice as I stared straight at Henry and Jerry as I said the word one by one, “Cut the act. I know everything.” When he heard that, Henry looked puzzled. “What do you know, Mom?” When I saw him still pretending to be stupid even now, I sneered, “What do I know? Don’t you have any idea? “Whose life you occupied and whose everything you enjoyed, don’t you know that in your heart?” I stared viciously at Henry. I couldn’t understand how he had the nerve to keep calling me “Mom” every day. “Sophie, did you forget to take your medication today?” “This is our son’s wedding day. There are so many relatives and friends here. So, please don’t make a scene.” “What’s the matter? Let’s talk about it at home.” As he spoke, Jerry hurriedly tried to pull me away. I yanked my arm from his grasp and laughed ruefully. “Oh, now you’re scared, Jerry?” “Do you ever have nightmares in the middle of the night?” I asked. “When you happily attend Henry’s wedding, doesn’t your conscience hurt?” My three questions left Henry frozen in place. He looked dumbstruck as he gazed at me. His lips parted, but no words came out. “She’s hopeless. Her husband and son treat her so well and she still has the face to pick a fight here?” “Yeah, it’s true. If you’re sick, get treated. If there’s no cure, then just die. Why come here and make everyone feel disgusted?”
